Where Do Umrah Flights Land?

Two main airports serve pilgrims travelling for Umrah from the UK.

King Abdulaziz International Airport, Jeddah

Jeddah is the main gateway for Umrah pilgrims. The Hajj Terminal at this airport was built specifically for pilgrims. It is one of the largest airport terminals in the world and handles millions of travellers during peak Umrah and Hajj seasons.

From Jeddah airport, Makkah is around 80 kilometres away, roughly a 45-minute to 1-hour drive depending on traffic. Ground transport is arranged as part of your package.

Prince Mohammed Bin Abdulaziz Airport, Madinah

Some itineraries fly directly into Madinah. This works well if your trip begins in the City of the Prophet before travelling to Makkah. Madinah airport is modern and handles international flights comfortably.

We plan your arrival and departure airports carefully based on your itinerary, usually flying into one city and departing from the other, so you avoid backtracking.

Direct or Connecting Flights: What Is the Difference?

Direct flights from the UK to Saudi Arabia are limited but available. Saudia operates select non-stop routes from London to Jeddah. If you live near London and want the simplest journey, a direct flight removes the stress of a connection.

Connecting flights are the reality for most UK pilgrims. A connection through Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi, or Istanbul adds time to your journey, but it opens up far more departure city options and often costs less.

Here is something we have learned from experience. A well-timed connection, where you have 2 to 3 hours in the transit airport, is rarely a problem. Issues tend to come from connections that are too tight, under 90 minutes, or too long, such as an overnight layover when you just want to reach Saudi Arabia. We book connections that make sense, not just the cheapest option.

Total Travel Time: What to Expect

Depending on your departure city and routing, total travel time to Jeddah or Madinah from the UK is usually:

London to Jeddah direct: around 6 to 7 hours
London with a Gulf connection: around 10 to 12 hours total
Manchester or Birmingham with a connection: around 11 to 13 hours total

This is still a long journey, even from the UK. We always recommend:

Booking an aisle seat if you need to move around during the flight.
Staying hydrated throughout the journey.
Avoiding heavy meals before and during travel.
Arriving at the airport early, since international check-in takes longer than domestic.

Economy Class

Most pilgrims fly economy. Modern economy cabins on Gulf carriers are comfortable enough for the journey, with reasonable seat space, in-flight entertainment, and meals included. For most pilgrims, economy works well.

Premium Economy

A step up from standard economy, premium economy offers extra legroom and sometimes a larger baggage allowance. This suits taller travellers or those who find standard seats uncomfortable on long flights.

Business Class

For those who want to arrive well rested, particularly elderly pilgrims or those with medical conditions, business class offers lie-flat seats on most Gulf carriers. Arriving rested can genuinely improve your first day at the Haram.

Baggage Allowance

Baggage allowance varies by airline and fare type, but most economy tickets for Umrah travel include:

One carry-on bag, typically 7 to 10 kilograms.
One or two checked bags, typically 23 kilograms each.

Pilgrims often return home with more luggage than they left with. Prayer items, gifts, Zamzam water, and souvenirs all add up. If you think you will need extra baggage for your return journey, we can often add this at booking for less than the airport price.

Zamzam water has specific rules. Airlines currently allow a limited quantity in checked baggage. Rules change from time to time, and we will confirm the current allowance before you travel.

Is it better to fly from my nearest airport or travel to a major hub?
